Location of Government Museum Kota:

This Museum is located inside the Brij Vilas Palace which is located on the north side of the Kishore Sagar Lake in Kota City, District Kota, Rajasthan.

Attractions of Government Museum Kota:

This Museum is also known as Brij Vilas Palace Museum. It displays a rich collection of rare coins, manuscripts and sculptures. It has been divided into these sections :

  • The Archaeological Section- It houses various sculptures, some dating back to the Gupta period (4th Century A.D.). The sculptures worth mentioning are of Shesh Sayi Lord Vishnu brought from town Baroli of District Chittaurgarh, Jain image of Vardhaman brought from District Baran and a dancing pair brought from town Ramgarh. Some specimens are also displayed in this section. Yupa pillars from town Badwa are very important specimens of the 3rd Century A. D., showing the popularity of Vedic rites. The Coins of different dynasties are also displayed here.
  • The Painting Section – It has several miniature paintings of Bundi, Kota, Nathdwara and Jaipur schools. The paintings of Shrimad Bhagawata of the early 17th Century A.D. are most attractive from the point of view of workmanship.
  • The Manuscripts Section – It displays various Sanskrit manuscripts including Vedic, Astronomical and Astrological works. Some Hindi manuscripts are also preserved here. The Gita and the Bhagawata written in the minutest letters on paper scroll are worth mentioning from the calligraphic point of view. Apart from these, several kinds of handicrafts, arms, costumes, etc. are also displayed in this section. It also displays a panoramic view of the cultural aspects of Kota region through photographs, charts, maps etc.

Visiting Hours in Government Museum Kota:

It remains open on all days except Fridays and State Government holidays from 10.00 A. M. to 5.00 P.M. An entry fee of Rs. 5 per person is charged. The Photography is prohibited. One has to obtain a prior permission from the Director of Archaeology and Museums, Jaipur.

There is a Fun Park located behind the Museum, which has a small zoo which remains open on all days except Tuesdays from 8.30 A.M. to 6.00 P.M. An entry fee of Rs. 3 per person is charged.
