History of Kuchaman Fort:

It is one of the oldest and most inaccessible Forts of Rajasthan. It was constructed in 760 A.D. by the Gujjar Pratihara dynasty rulers who controlled the salt trade. After the fall of Gujjar Pratihara dynasty in 960 A.D., the area came under the control of Chauhans of Ajmer. The Chauhans were followed by the Gaur rulers, who were ousted by the Rathores in 1724 A.D. The Rathores ruled the area until India’s independence and the merger of the princely States into Union of India. The rulers of Jodhpur used to mint their gold and silver coins here. It provides a panoramic view of the City, the Aravalli hills and the Sambar Lake during sunset and night.

Architecture of Kuchaman Fort:

The Fort is built on the top of a 1000 feet high straight hill, has high and massive ramparts, 32 bastions and 10 gates. It is known for its unique architecture, underground hideouts, secret escape routes, innumerable terraces and balconies, dungeons, an ancient flour mill and water harvesting system. It had several underground and overground tanks for storage of water which exist even today. An underground Swimming Pool known as Jal Mahal was made exclusively for the Queens and Princesses. The Sheesh Mahal is adorned with beautiful glass work.

The main hall known as Sabha Prakash was used by the rulers to hold courts and take decisions for the welfare of the citizens. It is ornamented with polished walls inlaid with semi-precious stones and adorned with miniature paintings, murals, gilded work and gold paint. The Meera Mahal, built by Ranjit Singh, is adorned with miniature paintings depicting the life story of Meerabai, a Rathore Poet-Saint and a great devotee of Lord Krishna. A Museum of weapons and armour is also located inside the Fort Complex.

There is a Meena Bazaar located below the Fort, where Kuchamani craftsmen sell exquisitely made handicrafts and fabrics.
