This Institute was established as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE) in the year 1960 as a joint enterprise of the Govt. of India & the State Govt. of Maharashtra. It was converted into Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology Nagpur & conferred upon the status of a ‘Deemed University’ [(under UGC Act, 1956 (3 of 1956)] with effect from 26th June, 2002 by the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, New Delhi. It has been recognized as an ‘Institute of National Importance’ vide the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.

Passed 10+2 exam with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the Chemistry/ Biotechnology/ Biology/ Technical Vocational subject.
