Location of Topkhana:

This, once magnificent structure, is located on the way from Panchayat Samiti Office towards Badi Pole in Jalore City, District Jalore, Rajasthan.

History of Topkhana:

King Bhoj, the ruler of Malwa in Central India from 1000 to 1060 C.E. was a Philosopher King and was an intellect of Sanskrit. He built many schools in his Capital Dhar, Ajmer and Jalore for the spread of education. The remains of that grand Sanskrit School are known as Topkhana due to the reason that artilleries were kept here by the Rathore dynasty rulers. After India’s Independence in 1947, it was used to store food grains by the supply officers of the District. Now, it is being managed by the State Archaeological Department.

Architecture of Topkhana:

It is a fine example of the beauty of middle ages art. A Temple is situated just inside the main entrance towards left side that might have had an idol of Shiva Lingam in the past. The main structure has 276 pillars adorned with beautiful carving work of flowers, chains, elephants, bells, vines and geometry on stone. Inside the main building, towards its right corner, one room is built 10 feet above surface level having stairs to lead there. This might have been the seat of headmaster or teacher to teach students in large numbers.

Towards the right side of the School is an incomplete flank adorned with raw art. The exterior of the main arch of the canopy is also incomplete. Many idols including those of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha and Lord Varaha in broken condition can be seen inside the complex. Small Temples are situated on both flanks in which no idols are present now.
