Location of Jalore Fort:

This Fort is located on the top of a high mountain about 1200 feet above sea level in the Southern part of Jalore City, District Jalore, Rajasthan.

History of Jalore Fort:

The year of its construction is not certain, but it was occupied by the rulers of Parmara dynasty in the 10th Century A.D. The British had imprisoned freedom fighters like Ganeshlal Vyas, Mathura Das Mathur, Fatehraj Joshi and Tulsidas Rathi during India’s struggle for Independence. Now, it is being managed by the State Archaeological Department and has been declared a protected building since 1956.

Architecture of Jalore Fort:

The Fort is 3/4 Km in length and 1/2 Km in breadth. It is approachable from the Northern side and one has to ascend zig-zag, steep and slippery ways to reach the First Gate called Suraj Pole. This gate is surrounded by a 25 feet high and 15 feet wide huge wall on the front side for protection against artillery firing. It has small rooms where security guards used to stay. The Second Gate called Dhruv Pole comes after covering a distance of half a mile from the first gate. This gate also has peculiar defensive features and without winning this post, one could not enter the Fort.

The Third Gate called Chand Pole is more impressive and strong as compared to others. From here onwards the rampart wall that runs along the way on both sides is divided into many parts. One part of the rampart wall before reaching the Fourth Gate called Sire Pole, takes a left turn upwards and touches the highest part of the mountain, while the second part of the rampart wall moves towards right side and while encircling mountain, meets the first boundary. Some artilleries could be found in the Fort’s compound.
