History & Architecture of Gurdwara Buddha Johar Sahib:

In the Year 1739, When Nadir Shah, the Emperor of Afghanistan, was on his way back to Persia after plundering many Cities of India, the Sikhs attacked his forces and freed much of the stolen goods and young women. Nadir Shah appointed Zakhrya Khan as Governor of Lahore and told him that the Sikhs would become rulers of this Country. Zakhrya Khan decided to destroy Sikhs from the face of the earth and announced a reward of Rs. 10 to anyone giving information leading to the arrest of a Sikh and Rs. 50 to anyone bringing the head of a Sikh. One Massa Ranghar presented cartloads of heads of Sikhs to Zakhrya Khan and was appointed the Chief of Amritsar as a reward.

Massa Ranghar took charge of the Golden Temple and banned Sikhs from visiting it. He started drinking and watching the dance of women inside the Golden Temple. When the Sikhs of Bikaner and Sri Ganganagar heard about it, they were filled with anger and Bhai Sukha Singh and Bhai Mehtab Singh decided to go to Amritsar to punish Massa Ranghar. They reached Amritsar and were carrying coin bags, so the watchmen at the entrance of the Golden Temple did not stop them. They reached near Massa Ranghar who was drunk and was watching the dance of the women. They placed the bag of coins in front of him. As soon as he bent to see the bag, the Sikhs cut his head and picked it up. Both the Sikhs vanished with lightning speed, before the people could know what had happened. Both Bhai Sukha Singh and Bhai Mehtab Singh visited Hanumangarh City with the head of Masaa Ranghar and took rest under a tree (a Gurdwara has been built at that place in Hanumangarh City). They finally reached this place in Sri Ganganagar on August 11, 1740 and hung the head of Massa Ranghar on a Jand tree located on the side of a pond. A beautiful Gurdwara with a sarovar has been constructed at the place in the memory of those Sikhs.

Later on, both Bhai Sahibs were captured by the Mughals and were asked to convert to Islam. But they refused and facing severe torture won martyrdom.
