Location of Umaid Bhawan Palace:

This Palace is located in Jodhpur City, District Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

History of Umaid Bhawan Palace:

It was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh between 1928 and 1943 A.D. with the purpose of giving employment to the people of Marwar during a long drawn famine.

Architecture of Umaid Bhawan Palace:

It is one of the largest private residences in the World, set amidst 26 acres of lush green gardens. It is built of golden yellow sandstone or Chittar stone and hence is also known as Chittar Palace. It was designed by renowned Edwardian architect Henry Lanchester and is a fine blend of the Eastern and Western architectural styles. This masterpiece of architecture was constructed by special system of interlocking with no mortar binding. Its splendid 105 feet high cupola is influenced by the Renaissance style, while the towers are influenced by the traditional Rajput style. Its lavish interiors with gilt furniture and elegant artwork follow the Art Deco style, well complemented by the exotic murals of the Polish artist Stefan Norblin.

A major part of this Palace has now been converted into a Luxury Heritage Hotel and is being managed by the Taj Group of Hotels, while some part of it is still occupied by the royal family of Jodhpur and still another part houses a well-maintained Private Museum, displaying a rich collection of items belonging to the Maharaja and the royal family like weapons, antiques, fascinating clocks, crockery, trophies and a huge banner presented by Queen Victoria of England.
