Location of Bijoliyan:

The City of Bijoliyan is located at a distance of 85 Km from Bhilwara City, close to the border of District Bundi in the Southeastern part of District Bhilwara, Rajasthan.

History & Attractions of Bijoliyan:

This picturesque City is located on a plateau called the ‘Uparmal’. It was known as ‘Vindhyavali’ in the ancient times. It is a walled City with two gates, one on the South side and the other on the North side. It is famous for :

Saivite Temples – It is a group of three Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that these were built in around 10th Century A.D. One of the Temple is known as Hajaresvara Mahadev Temple or Sahastralinga Mahadev Temple as it has a huge Shiva lingam which is surrounded by hundreds of small lingas. The other Temples are the Mahakala Temple and the Baijanath Temple.

Mandakini Baori – It is a reservoir with steps leading down to the water level. It is considered to be a holy water tank formed from the ancient stream Mandakini, which once flowed amongst the Temples.

Lord Ganesha Temple – This Temple has unique architecture as its central dome is surrounded by four chhatris on each corner of the roof. This feature is commonly seen in the Rajput palaces and forts. A statue of Lord Ganesha guards the entrance to the Temple.

Jain Temples – These Jain Temples are five in number and are situated at a distance of 1.5 Km Southeast of Bijolian City. These are dedicated to Lord Parshavnath (the 23rd Jain Tirthankar) and are excellent examples of the 12th Century Jain architecture. These were built in 1170 A.D. by Mahajan Lala during the rule of Chauhan King Someshwar of Ajmer. The walls and the pillars of these Temples are adorned with beautiful carvings. One Temple is considered sacred containing a complete small model of a temple inside. The Temple compound has rock inscriptions dating back to the 12th Century A.D. One inscription known as the ‘Shankh Puran’, is 15 feet long and 5 feet wide, and contains 52 lines in Sanskrit language. These inscriptions are included in the list of ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains of Rajasthan by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Rock inscriptions – These Rock inscriptions belong to 1170 A.D. and are included in the list of ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains of Rajasthan by the Archaeological Survey of India.
