Location of Abhaneri:

This Village is also known as Abhanagri. It is located on Ahmedabad-New Delhi Railway Line and Jaipur-Agra Road at a distance of 33 Km from Dausa City near Bandikui, District Dausa, Rajasthan.

History & Architecture of Important Places at Abhaneri:

This ancient Village is famous for Post-Gupta or early medieval monuments. It has contributed various pieces of sculpture to many museums Worldwide. The important places to visit here are :

Sikandara Chouraha – This place is located at a distance of 25 Km from Dausa City on the way to Abhaneri and 8 Km from Village Abhaneri.

It is famous in India as well as in International market for its intricate carvings on sandstone taken from Bansi Pahadpur, Dholpur and Karauli. The lattice-work jalis, pots, idols of Gods and Goddesses, animals shapes, lamps, fountains, furniture, Temples etc. are exported from here.

Harshat Mata Temple – This Temple was built by King Chandra of Chauhan dynasty who ruled Abhaneri during 8th and 9th Century A.D. The local Goddess Harshat Mata (Goddess Harasiddhi) is shown in joyous mood and spreads brightness (Abha in Hindi) all around, hence the Village is named Abhaneri.

The Temple is a finest example of intricate carvings on stone. It is built on a double terraced platform which was the superstructure of Mahameru style. The Sanctum is Panchratha on plan and consists of a Sandhara Garbhagriha having carvings of beautiful Brahmanical deities and sculptures on every niche of the buttress, a Mandap having Pillars and is adorned by a domed ceiling. It is currently being managed by Archaeological Survey of India and is in ruins with pieces of sculptures lying strewn around. An annual Fair which lasts for three days is held here in the honour of Harshat Mata. An idol of Harshat Mata has been installed by the Villagers and daily worship is offered to the deity.

Chand Baori – This architectural marvel was built by King Chandra of Chauhan dynasty who ruled Abhaneri during 8th and 9th Century A.D.

This Step-Well, having stairs with unparalleled architectural and artistic beauty, is an excellent example of the early medieval architecture in India. It is one of the earliest built Baories in Rajasthan and one of India’s deepest and largest step wells. It is surrounded by pillared verandahs on all four sides with entrance on the North, is square-shaped and 100 feet in depth. It has double flight of steps with 13 landings from the East, South and West sides. It also has the multi-storeyed pillared pavilions approachable by a flight of steps from rear side. The images of Lord Ganesha and Mahishasura Mardini Goddess Durga have been installed in two projected niches on the lower storey. It has provision of separate changing rooms for ladies and gents. A beautiful garden is located on the outer periphery of the Baori.

The verandahs of the Baori have ancient idols and sculptures recovered from the surroundings of Harshat Mata Temple. The Archaeological Survey of India is developing a Museum here. Many beautiful sculptures of Harihara, Ganesha, Vishnu, Ardhanarishwara, Shiva, Bhairava etc. are displayed here. These sculptures depict the high level of talent achieved by the artisans of that period.
